What is the GTA 6 story about?

GTA 6 is the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two small-time criminals in modern Vice City. Rockstar’s official premise says a robbery that should have been simple turns bad. The fallout pulls the pair into a criminal plot spanning the entire state of Leonida. Surviving it means trusting each other.

That premise is the whole of what Rockstar has published about the plot. It sits on the official site at rockstargames.com/VI. Rockstar has released no mission list, no chapter breakdown and no ending.

The official text uses the phrase “criminal conspiracy” for the threat. It never names the people behind it. It never says what the score was, who set it up, or what went wrong. Everything beyond those lines is fan theory.

Who are the two protagonists of GTA 6?

GTA 6 has two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Lucia is the series’ first female lead since the 1997 original. Jason is an Army veteran working for a drug runner in the Leonida Keys. Lucia is a Liberty City native who starts the game fresh out of a Leonida prison. You play both, and you switch between them.

Lucia was the face of Trailer 1 on December 4, 2023, which opened on her in a prison interview and spoke her name. Jason appeared in that trailer too, unnamed, in the robbery shots. Rockstar named him on May 6, 2025, the same day as Trailer 2 and the launch of the official character pages.

Both characters have a record before the story begins. Their backgrounds are on their own pages, and we keep them there.

Unlike GTA V’s three leads, who meet over the course of the game, the two leads are already a pair when the story starts. Rockstar’s premise makes that bond the hinge of the plot.

Where does the GTA 6 story take place?

The story starts in Vice City, a modern city widely compared to Miami, and spreads across the state of Leonida. The official site names five further regions, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rockstar’s premise says the conspiracy stretches across the state, so the plot leaves the city.

Each region has an official description and a page on this site. Vice City is the beach, nightlife and money center. The Leonida Keys is Jason’s home turf, where smuggling pays the bills. The other four range from swamp to sugar town to wilderness.

Rockstar has not said which regions matter to which part of the story. An Extended Look on August 27, 2026 showed missions and side activities without naming a region for each or labeling any as a story chapter.

What has Rockstar said about the plot, and what has it not?

Rockstar has published exactly one paragraph of plot. It covers two leads, a robbery gone wrong, a conspiracy across Leonida, and mutual dependence as the way through. It has published nothing about the antagonist, the ending, mission structure, an official story length or how the six supporting characters tie in. Anything more specific is unconfirmed.

Rockstar’s character pages describe each supporting figure’s world, not their role in the main plot. Raul Bautista is presented as a bank robber looking for a crew. Brian Heder is the smuggler Jason works for. Whether either one is the score, the conspiracy or a side story, Rockstar has not said.

What is the tone of the GTA 6 story?

GTA 6 keeps the series’ satire of American life, now aimed at a social-media-era Florida stand-in. Trailer 1 mixed viral-video clips, beach parties and a gator in a convenience store with Lucia’s prison interview. Trailer 2 leaned on the couple and the crime. Expect comedy around the edges and a serious core.

The official premise itself is not a joke. It describes two people in over their heads and a plot bigger than either of them.

The trailers pull in the other direction. Trailer 1’s montage was built like a scroll through Leonida’s feeds, complete with mudding trucks and rooftop pools. Trailer 2 used the Pointer Sisters’ “Hot Together” under shots of the pair working, driving and hiding out. Our trailer vs gameplay guide compares the three videos.

An Extended Look showed missions, driving, combat and side activities on a standard PS5. It named no chapter and no antagonist. According to GameSpot’s preview coverage, Rockstar says the game will keep its satire away from real politicians and real events. The plot itself waits for November 19, 2026.

When and where can you play the GTA 6 story?

The story launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced. Two editions exist, Standard and Ultimate, and both contain the full campaign. Rockstar has announced no separate story DLC and no edition-exclusive missions.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 a love story?

Partly. The official site text never says love; it describes two partners whose survival depends on each other. In previews reported by GameSpot and The Verge, Rockstar framed the story around whether the relationship survives. It also said Jason and Lucia do not have to be a romantic couple.

Can you play as both Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?

Yes. Both are playable protagonists, and An Extended Look on August 27, 2026 showed both characters under player control, including inside the same missions. Rockstar has not said whether every mission is playable as either character.

Where does the GTA 6 story take place?

Rockstar has announced no returning characters and no direct plot link to GTA V or the 2002 Vice City. The new Vice City is a modern-day setting. Any crossover claims come from fans, not from Rockstar.

How long is the GTA 6 story?

Rockstar has not published an official length, mission count or chapter list. According to The Verge, citing The New York Times, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said a playthrough in February 2026 took about 80 hours, story plus some optional content. Treat that as one developer’s run, not a spec.
